Me

Hiya, Kita here and this blog is going to chronicle my journey to fluency in various languages. By fluency, I mean being able to understand and follow the spoken language (tv shows, news broadcasts, everyday conversations) as well as being able to read in the language (books, blogs, newspapers), and understand the content without the aid of a dictionary. I am going to devote at least two years(24 months) to each language with the hope of fluency in each language at the end of the two years. So, I’m going to go ahead, and start with a “hard” language, Korean.

I have as of July 24, 2009 no real knowledge of this language. In fact, I haven’t even learned the Korean alphabet Hangul yet (which I will learn by the end of today).

I have decided to start with Korean because I really want to be fluent in this language. For me, if I never learned another language to fluency, I would still be satisfied with having  just learning Korean. I’m not even going to lie another reason I want to learn it is for the bragging rights associated with learning one of those impossible Asian languages.

Anywho, I plan to learn the languages using an input over output method, where I am constantly listening, reading, and watching lots of different things in a language without worrying about trying to speak or write in the language. I am going to invest as much time as possible into learning by avoiding my native language (English) as much as possible. By this, I simply mean that I am replacing everything that I do in English (surf the Internet, watch tv, read fanfiction, etc.) with a Korean version of it, and later I will do the same in the other languages I decide to learn. I will not be signing up or taking any classes because  you can spend years learning a language in a classroom, and still remain at a beginner level. Finally, I’ll mostly be using materials that are freely available online for those like me that have a problem bordering on phobia about spending money.

So, here we go my journey begins…
